The Core Difference
Liability insurance covers damage you cause to OTHERS — their injuries and property. It does NOT cover damage to your own vehicle or your own medical bills (in most states).
"Full coverage" (not an official term) typically adds collision + comprehensive on top of liability. This means your OWN vehicle is covered too, minus your deductible.

When Liability Only Makes Sense
- Your vehicle is old with low market value (under ~$5,000)
- You can comfortably afford to replace/repair the vehicle if totaled
- You rarely drive or only drive very short distances
When Full Coverage Makes Sense
- Vehicle is financed or leased (required by lender/lessor)
- Vehicle is newer or has significant value ($10,000+)
- You cannot afford out-of-pocket repair/replacement costs
- You want peace of mind from maximum protection
